Internships & Scholarships

The Health Center Foundation is delighted to offer a summer internship program for those interested in the medical field and to provide scholarships for students in need of financial assistance.

Why Intern?

Hear from our previous winners and interns on their experience with the program and how it benefited them with their future careers!

Rachel Behrends – 2022

Emma Alexander – 2021

Throughout this internship, I was given the amazing opportunity to see the ins and outs of Sidney Regional Medical Center through job shadowing many of the departments and their members. I have learned so much this summer, and I am extremely grateful to the Health Center Foundation and Sidney Regional Medical Center. I was allowed the experience of being submerged into clinical pharmacy, which was amazing. I am thankful for the exploration I was able to do in my future career. SRMC’s Pharmacy Department helped increase my passion for the world of pharmacy and what it truly means to be a pharmacist. I also enjoyed being in surgery. Observing all of the moving pieces that allow an operation room to run smoothly was electrifying. I was surrounded by impeccable medical providers every day and learned so much from them.

Overall, I believe SRMC is a fantastic hospital with great staff and a small-town family feeling. While shadowing the multitude of different departments our hospital has to offer, I was amazed to see the number of wonderful employees here. SRMC’s team, as a whole, is fantastic! Our healthcare providers build relationships with the patients and provide excellent care. The hospital staff is extremely patient, caring, and thorough when they’re with their patients. I would be honored to be an employee and a patient here at SRMC. I will forever be grateful for this amazing opportunity and the knowledge I have acquired!

Maddy Watchorn – 2021

I was very blessed to be chosen as an intern for SRMC. I was able to learn how different departments work individually and collectively. Through this experience, I was able to experience first-hand the miracle of life, an ultrasound of twins, and experience the sorrow of death. Additionally, I was able to learn my true passions which helped me decide on a more specific career choice. I will never forget this internship and the stories I get to tell because of this amazing opportunity. They truly are some once-in-a-lifetime experiences!

Summer Internship Program

The HCF Summer Internship Program provides practical experience to third-year undergraduate students who are pursuing a career in the medical field. Each summer, two paid interns shadow in various departments at Sidney Regional Medical Center as well as other medical fields within our region. The goal is to provide the interns with a better understanding of the rural healthcare system. By carefully observing and actively participating in the collaborative efforts of various departments and services, these individuals will be able to learn what high-quality, compassionate care looks like.

The program begins shortly after the completion of the spring college semester and ends prior to the beginning of the fall course. The timeline is determined by the program coordinator and the students selected. Housing is available for those away from home. Spring applications are available February 2024. Applications are DUE March 30, 2024.

Scholarships

The HCF offers two summer internships, two Thayer Family Scholarships to those who are pursuing careers in the medical field each year, and the Robert P. Goodwin Scholarship. Spring applications are available February 2024. Applications DUE March 30, 2024.

Thayer Family Scholarships

The Thayer Family Scholarships, in the amount of $1,000 each, will be awarded to two students (third-year college level or SRMC employee continuing education) enrolled in a nursing, medical, or clinical program, who plan to seek employment in the Nebraska panhandle region upon completion of their academic program.

Robert P. Goodwin Scholarship

The Robert P. Goodwin Scholarship of $500 will be awarded to one student that is either entering or currently attending college with a healthcare-related focus.

Students interested in applying for the internship positions or scholarships should be in a third-year undergraduate healthcare-related field of study or continuing medical field education students/SRMC employees.
