Behavioral Health Services at SRMC: Empowering the Nebraska Panhandle

Evidence-Based Care Rooted in Empathy, Creativity, and Resilience

At Sidney Regional Medical Center, we believe that mental well-being is the foundation of a healthy life. Our Behavioral Health department provides a safe, supportive environment where residents of the Nebraska Panhandle can find the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges.

By combining clinical expertise with a deeply personal, strengths-based approach, our team helps you move beyond your symptoms toward a life of purpose and emotional balance.

Our Therapeutic Philosophy: Your Strengths are the Solution

Therapy at SRMC is more than just a conversation; it is a proactive partnership. We focus on identifying your unique internal resources (your resilience, your humor, your past successes) and teaching you how to apply them to your current difficulties.

What to expect from our patient-centered care:

  • Identify Core Strengths: Recognize the innate tools you already possess.
  • Develop Adaptive Coping: Learn new, healthy ways to manage stress and emotional triggers.
  • Empowered Healing: Build a personalized “mental health toolkit” for long-term wellness.

Evidence-Based Treatment

We utilize scientifically proven methods to ensure you receive the highest standard of care. Our practitioners specialize in several key therapeutic areas:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT explores the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and actions. By identifying and shifting negative or “distorted” thought patterns, you can change your emotional response to stressful situations.

  • Effective for: Anxiety, Depression, and Stress Management.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is designed to help those who experience intense or overwhelming emotions. It focuses on building four specific skill sets: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

  • Effective for: Mood disorders and emotional instability.

Specialized Pediatric Psychiatry & Boys Town Partnership

Accessing specialized care in rural areas can be a challenge. To bridge this gap, SRMC has partnered with Boys Town in Omaha to offer premier remote telehealth psychiatry for children and adolescents.

  • Treatments for Pediatric patients aged 6–17.
  • Through our high-definition telehealth system, Dr. Basalay provides expert psychiatric evaluations and medication management once a month, right here at our Behavioral Health office.
  • See if Psychiatry is right for your child

Senior Social Hour

Wednesdays 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Senior Social Hour is a peer support group dedicated to promoting enjoyment and creativity through artistic expression. This group is primarily designed for individuals aged 65 and older, although we will consider age in certain circumstances. Participants can look forward to snacks, check-ins, and engaging art projects. There is no need to be an artist: it is the process, not the end result, that matters. Due to limited seating capacity, we currently have a seating limit; however, we are open to adjusting the day/time if needed. Call ShaNawn Strong at 308-254-8736 for more information.

Community Trainings

Kristen Rose and Kelsey Watchorn are eager to train community members on any of the following classes. While Kristen has taught several agriculture organizations and a plethora of classes on recognizing eating disorders, they are both eager to develop further trainings based on the community’s needs and their ability to educate. In order to thoroughly prepare and secure a meeting place and time, please request a community training six weeks in advance. To check their availability, call 308-254-8736.

Changing Our Mental and Emotional Trajectory (COMET™):

Recognizing that mental health functions on a spectrum, COMET™ teaches people how to intervene when they encounter someone who is in a “vulnerable space” and how to help shift the person’s mental health trajectory back to a place of wellness instead of proceeding toward a mental health crisis. COMET™ is a strong complement to other strategies to reduce the suffering resulting from high levels of stress in rural, agricultural communities.

Question Persuade Refer (QPR):

As someone who may be in the best possible position to prevent a suicide, you will find that QPR is designed to help you save a life. Become a gatekeeper: anyone can recognize a crisis and detect warning signs when someone is contemplating suicide.

Just Breathe: Stress and skills for more intentional living:

Everyone encounters stressful situations and adversity, and learning how to manage your stress in those situations is essential to lead a more balanced and healthier life. Through a variety of methods, this training will help participants identify the cause(s) of stress, understand how self-regulation can prevent and reduce stress, and recognize the connection between self-regulation and intentional living.

Meet one of the newest member of the Behavioral Health team! Therapy Dog, Carl Gustav Jung joined Behavioral Health in November 2023, and has seen clients improve rapidly. As a therapy dog, Gus brings joy to each client when he runs to greet them or snuggles up and naps on their shoes. Kristen, Kelsey, and ShaNawn love seeing patients and Walk-In Clinic staff smile at Gus’ bubbly and fun personality when he comes to the clinic each day. This adorable Australian Shepherd is soon to be certified through the AKC’s Canine Good Citizens (CGC) test!
